Crossroads Minute: 5 Recommendations
Hey, everyone! Erin here, from Newsies Minute and Crossroads Minute and Thnks Fr Th Lrcs and Wet Hot American Moon Juice and FMK All Day (but for the purposes of this particular post, Crossroads Minute).
Any of you who have come over the the Scavengers Network Patreon from a previous Erin-and-James show are probably familiar with our monthly recommendations, but I'm sure there are patrons who have NO idea what this is, so I wanted to do a quick "no but really what is this" thing before we get into it.
When James and I had our own Patreon, we did a monthly newsletter and, for $5+ patrons, a monthly list of 5 things we recommend people check out. Now that we're over here on ScavNet, we are doing an every-other-month newsletter and then on the non-newsletter months we'll do a recommendations list.
Which is what this is.
So here we go...some things we like that we think you will also maybe like!
1) See You Yesterday - This is a movie on Netflix. It's a time travel movie but it's also about the daily peril that kids of color deal with in their everyday life. CJ and Sebastian are two brilliant kids who have invented time travel and they get the chance to use it to try to prevent a tragedy. I found this randomly just looking around Netflix way too late one night. I was jarred by the ending, but I'm actually really glad that that was how it ended (when you've watched it, come find me on Twitter (@unabashedjames) to discuss it). The performances, story, and meaning behind it all are very very good and I'm really happy I watched it. (J)
2) Tick Tock: A Tale For Two -- This is a game that can be played on your phone, tablet, computer, Switch, pretty much wherever you play games. Kevin and I played it via Steam on our computers, and it was a lot of fun. The conceit of it is that you work together to solve puzzles--and you are each seeing different things on your separate screens so there's no way to solve the puzzles unless you team up. Technically you can show one another your screens if you want to, but we only did that once, in the last chapter, because we had figured out literally everything else and we were having a miscommunication about how something was spelled. It's only 3 chapters long so only takes a few hours total, and it was a really fun stay-at-home date night type activity for us. (E)
3) React videos by Jamel_AKA_Jamal -- I stumbled upon this guy a couple of weeks ago and I just watched him watching bunches of songs by Rage Against the Machine and it was just so amazing to watch this man who clearly loves music, find and fall in love with this band. He is so enthusiastic and he's just so INTO the music he's listening to. I haven't watched him react to a song that he hasn't liked, so my opinion is certainly very skewed, but I just love watching him marvel at songs. He's also moved from Rage to Audioslave to Soundgarden to Temple of the Dog to Pearl Jam and beyond and as I type this I'm currently watching him react to Bad Brains, which is a trip. I really love his energy and I have loved watching his journey. (J)
4) A Voice From Darkness -- This is a fiction podcast that I found super compelling and quick to listen to/binge. Dr. Malcolm Ryder is a radio parapsychologist, and people call into his show seeking his help with paranormal problems. It's really well done and I binged the whole thing in one night (there are currently only about 10 episodes). (E)
5) Sherlock - This is about the Benedict Cumberbatch BBC show. I was recently up super late and looking for something to watch when I remembered Beth (I think it was Beth) from Fanonball and Apotelesma and Myth Takes (PALLAS FOREVER) talking about the episode The Sign of Three and so I decided to watch that. And then I watched more and more until I had basically watched the series over again (except for the Hound of the Baskervilles episode. I don't much care for that one) and it's just really great and clever. BC is great but the people that surround him are maybe even better. Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott and the man who plays the Inspector and Mary and just everyone. It's very great. I'm realizing right now that we actually did an episode of Unabashedly Obsessed about the show, so if you'd like to know more about my (our, really) feelings on the show, go listen to that! And if you watched Season 2 of Fleabag, but you haven't watched Sherlock, boy are you in for a treat. (J)
